Tips for First-Time Volunteers

November 19, 2019

Are you interested in volunteering but aren’t sure where to start? Do you wonder which volunteer opportunities are right for you, your schedule, and your community? Worry no more! Today we’re here with some tips for first-timers just like you, so you’ll be ready to get out there and get started!

Before You Start Your First Volunteer Activity

The first thing you need to remember about any volunteer opportunity is this: relax. Volunteering doesn’t always need to be a somber, serious affair; have some fun with it. Remember, the more enjoyment you get out of volunteering, the more good you’re putting out into the world!

Once you’ve taken that first step, the rest should come a little bit easier.

Three Tips for New Volunteers

Here are a few tips to help get you comfortable, confident, and eager to begin.

Tip #1: Check Your Schedule

Finding the right time and location is an absolute necessity when it comes to choosing volunteer opportunities. That way, you can put it right on your schedule. Believe it or not, actually writing it down or typing it out will help motivate you to get started.

Tip #2: Choose something you’re passionate about

Do you want to help kids get a safe place to sleep? Would you enjoy a day of working with your hands to build bunk beds? No matter what your interests and skills are, there’s bound to be a volunteer opportunity somewhere that’s perfect for you (especially right here at Sleep in Heavenly Peace!)

Tip #3: Bring your friends (and make new ones)

Volunteering isn’t–and shouldn’t be–a solitary job. Bring your friends, family, and coworkers, and remember to make some new friends among your fellow volunteers. You never know what you’ll learn or whom you’ll meet!
