Four hundred thousand beds.
It’s a number big enough to be difficult to wrap your head around. But for Sleep in Heavenly Peace, it represents something much more meaningful: 400,000 children who now have a safe, comfortable place to sleep.
On August 25, volunteers with SHP’s OH-Cincinnati chapter delivered the nonprofit’s 400,000th bed to a family with four children. The milestone delivery included two bunk beds, along with all new mattresses, pillows and bedding—all provided at no cost to the family.
Getting those beds where they needed to go wasn’t exactly easy.
A severe storm and resulting power outage created unexpected challenges for the volunteer team, adding more than two hours to the delivery. But chapter president Todd Forman and his team kept working until the job was done.
What This Mission Is All About
Since Sleep in Heavenly Peace was founded in 2012, thousands of volunteers across the country have built, assembled and delivered beds to children who otherwise might be sleeping on floors, couches or makeshift spaces. What started with a handful of volunteers has grown into a nationwide network of more than 400 chapters.
And the pace continues to accelerate.
SHP delivered its 200,000th bed in 2024 and reached 300,000 beds in 2025. Now, just over a year later, volunteers have delivered another 100,000 beds, with a projected delivery of the half-millionth milestone bed next year.
That kind of growth is worth celebrating. But the number that keeps SHP focused is more than 100,000.
That’s the number of children currently waiting for a bed through SHP chapters nationwide.
“From the first bed I built in my garage to number 400,000, what gets me is how many people have made this mission their own,” said Luke Mickelson, founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. “400,000 beds have now been delivered to kids who needed them, all because someone volunteered, donated, started a chapter, or simply decided to help.”
The Milestone Delivery
The OH-Cincinnati chapter is a perfect example of what happens when a community decides to help.
Founded in January 2024, the chapter delivered its first beds just two months later. Since then, its volunteers have delivered 1,650 beds to children throughout the Cincinnati area. Today, another 116 families in the community are waiting for 284 beds.
For Forman, being part of the 400,000th delivery was about much more than marking a milestone.
“It’s been such a rich experience, not just building and delivering beds for kids, which is so important, but seeing our volunteers come together and work toward a common goal,” he said.
